Types of Awards
1. Feasibility Awards
- Purpose: Assess the potential for creating or expanding protected areas.
- Use Cases:
- Legal pathway development.
- Field surveys for endangered species.
- Grant Amount: Average $10,000 (exceptionally up to $20,000).
2. Protected or Conserved Area Creation Awards
- Purpose: Support the establishment or expansion of protected areas on land or sea.
- Goal: Facilitate sustainable conservation aligned with community and government needs.
- Grant Amount: No set maximum; applications assessed individually.
Eligibility Criteria
Projects must meet the following requirements:
- Primary Objective: Creation or expansion of protected/conserved areas.
- Current Status: Proposed areas must be unprotected (check via World Database of Protected Areas).
- Focus Areas:
- Globally significant populations of Critically Endangered or Endangered species.
- Large tropical/subtropical forests or habitats critical for climate mitigation.
- Project Implementer: Must be a legally registered NGO authorized to work in the project country.
- Community Support: Demonstrated support from relevant governments and local/Indigenous communities (FPIC conducted).
- Legal Protection Mechanism: Change in legal status of the area to mitigate threats to biodiversity and carbon storage.
- Sustainable Management:
- Management plans and committees to ensure biodiversity conservation.
- Resource extraction limits to prevent unsustainable use.
