About the Organization

  • Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) provides life-saving emergency relief and long-term medical care to vulnerable and excluded communities worldwide.
  • The organization operates independently, delivering care based solely on need, without regard to ethnic origin, gender, religion, or political affiliation.
  • MSF's Palliative Care Challenge: Annually, around 40,000 patients die in MSF’s projects, and many do not receive adequate palliative care despite existing efforts and resources.

Purpose of the Proposal

  • MSF aims to improve the quality of death and dying by integrating structural and sustainable palliative care services into its projects.
  • The focus is on developing and piloting practical tools, training materials, and decision-making algorithms tailored for nursing staff.

Objective

  • To refine, adapt, pilot, and endorse palliative care training resources for nursing staff across various care levels, ensuring:
    • Decentralized and high-quality palliative care in MSF projects globally.

Responsibilities

1. Training Material Refinement and Adaptation

  • Ensure the materials are suitable for the three levels of MSF services: home-based, primary, and secondary care.
  • Pilot and test the materials in Kenya, Malawi, Somalia, and India, addressing usability and alignment with local needs.
  • Finalize and secure endorsement from MSF management for global use.

2. Collaboration on Holistic Palliative Care Model Development

  • Co-develop a decision-making algorithm and a holistic care model (MVP), ensuring:
    • Practicality and feasibility for nursing staff.
    • Adaptation to field challenges at various levels of service (home-based, primary, secondary care).
    • Implementation aligned with advanced illness care goals.

3. Networking and Collaboration

  • Map and engage with existing networks and partnerships within MSF and external healthcare providers.
  • Foster collaboration with other organizations for shared learning and support.
  • Facilitate mentorship opportunities and partnerships to enhance palliative care quality.

Deliverables

  1. Simplified decision-making and holistic care model (MVP) for palliative care.
  2. Support for task-shifting to enhance nursing care for advanced illness in selected MSF countries.
  3. Creation of a user-friendly repository for the Palliative Care toolkit, detailing how to establish palliative care activities.
  4. Mapping and partnering with external palliative care organizations and networks.
  5. Development of a dissemination process, including clear guidelines for usage, adaptation, and feedback mechanisms.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nursing qualification and prior experience as a Nursing Manager in Palliative Care projects.
