Girl Effect in India

Launched in 2019, Chhaa Jaa is a digital-first youth program that empowers adolescent girls in India (ages 17-19) by providing:

  • Social and behavior change content on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
  • Bol Behen Chatbot – A Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp chatbot for exploring taboo topics safely.
  • A dedicated website for youth-friendly services and blog content.
  • BAK BAK Gang – A girls-only Facebook group for community support.

Background: Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) in India

  • Rising Internet & Social Media Use has led to an increase in cyber crimes against women (11% rise in 2022).
  • Adolescent Vulnerability – 15% of adolescents have faced online sexual abuse or exploitation.
  • Gender Inequality Online – TFGBV extends offline gender inequities into the digital space.
  • Need for Prevention & Awareness – Educating both girls and boys on TFGBV, gender norms, and online safety is crucial.

Program Objectives

The initiative aims to create a safe digital environment by:

  1. Enabling Safe Digital Access for Girls – Equipping them with digital literacy skills and knowledge of their rights.
  2. Increasing Awareness of TFGBV – Engaging girls, boys, parents, educators, and communities in preventing online gender-based violence.
  3. Facilitating Access to Support Services – Connecting individuals to legal, police, and community-based support systems.

Who We Are Looking For

Skills, Experience, and Expertise Required:

  • Extensive experience in qualitative research focused on gender and sexual/reproductive health.
  • Innovative research methodologies and comparative studies experience.
  • Ability to lead the entire research process, ensuring ethical and quality standards.
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations, including minors and adolescents.
  • Strong understanding of Child Protection/Safeguarding policies.
  • Fieldwork team with both female and male qualitative interviewers.
  • Proven record in managing research partnerships effectively.
  • Exceptional communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to deliver high-quality reports on time and within budget.
