About the Organization
Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) provides life-saving emergency relief and long-term medical care to vulnerable communities worldwide. Despite efforts, around 40,000 patients die in MSF’s projects every year, and the quality of death and dying remains unaddressed for most. MSF aims to integrate palliative care services in a structural and sustainable manner across its projects.
Objective
Refine, adapt, pilot, and endorse palliative care training resources for nursing staff to ensure decentralized, high-quality palliative care in MSF projects globally. The focus is on developing a minimum viable product (MVP) aligned with a decision-making algorithm and holistic care model.
Key Responsibilities
1. Training Material Refinement, Adaptation & Finalization
- Adapt existing palliative care toolkits and training materials for neonates, paediatric, and adult patients.
- Ensure alignment with three levels of care: home-based, primary, and secondary care.
- Pilot and test materials in Kenya, Malawi, Somalia, and India.
- Finalize and secure MSF management approval for project-wide use.
2. Development of a Decentralized Holistic Palliative Care Model
- Co-develop an MVP decision-making algorithm with the Project Manager.
- Ensure feasibility from a nursing perspective and adaptability to MSF field challenges.
- Ensure implementation across various care settings while maintaining nursing care goals for advanced illnesses.
3. Networking & Collaboration for Palliative Care Support
- Map existing palliative care networks within MSF and external providers.
- Build partnerships to integrate quality palliative care into MSF projects.
- Facilitate mentorship, shared learning, and resource exchange with external stakeholders.
Deliverables
✅ A simplified decision-making and holistic care model (MVP) for Palliative Care.
✅ Task-shifting support for selected MSF countries.
✅ Development of a user-friendly Palliative Care toolkit (guidance for care integration).
✅ Mapping and formation of external Palliative Care partnerships.
✅ Dissemination process with clear usage and feedback mechanisms.
Eligibility Criteria
✔ Nursing qualification.
✔ Experience as a Nursing Manager in Palliative Care projects.
✔ Field experience in humanitarian settings.
✔ Expertise in Paediatric Palliative Care (medical + management).
✔ Person-centred care knowledge & experience.
✔ Teaching & training capabilities.
✔ Strong communication & interpersonal skills (including patient-family-medical communication).
✔ Networking and representation experience.
✔ Ability to meet deadlines.
✔ Fluent in English.
✔ Research experience (advantageous).
✔ Commitment to MSF’s values and mission.
