Purpose

The Physician Scientist Training Grant is designed to support early-career physician-scientists committed to advancing sleep and circadian science research. The grant provides:

  • Protected time for mentored research.
  • Opportunity to build a track record of funding.
  • Preparation for larger studies and grant opportunities.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible Individuals:

  • MD, DO, or equivalent medical degree holders.
  • Within 10 years of post-doctoral/clinical training or first faculty appointment.
  • Open to both US and international applicants.

Ineligible Individuals:

  • Those with independent research funding exceeding $250,000. (Excludes salary-based training grants).
  • Individuals with a financial conflict of interest or significant financial benefit from the proposed work.
  • Current AASM and AASM Foundation Board of Directors members. (Cannot serve as PI, co-PI, key personnel, mentor, or consultant during their term or one year post-term).
  • Applicants from countries under US OFAC sanctions.

Research Focus

Projects must address unanswered scientific questions related to:

  • Sleep and circadian science.
  • Sleep disorders.
  • Sleep health.

Mentorship Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Identify a primary mentor with expertise in sleep and circadian research.
  • Optionally form a mentoring team for diverse expert advice.
  • Collaborate with mentors to prepare the application.

Grant Restrictions

  • Applicants can apply for multiple AASM Foundation grants, but the same project cannot be submitted for multiple grants.
  • If an applicant holds an open AASM grant, they must:
    • Demonstrate no overlap between projects.
    • Indicate plans to close the current grant if selected for new funding.
  • Proposals for funding to support ongoing projects funded by other grants are not eligible.

Resubmission Policy

  • Single resubmission is allowed within 12 months of the original notification.
  • Resubmission must include a response to reviewers’ critiques.
  • Resubmissions across different grant programs are not permitted.

Budget and Payment

  • Grant Amount: Up to $100,000 (2 years).
  • Indirect Costs: Capped at 8%.
  • Payment Structure:
    • 90% upon contract execution.
    • 10% upon final report approval.
  • Alternate payment schedules allowed with a maximum variance of 10%, subject to approval.

Deliverables and Reporting

  1. Goals and Outcome Measures: Must align with proposal objectives.
  2. Publications:
    • Original research in peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine).
    • Abstract submission to APSS SLEEP meeting.
  3. Reports:
    • Progress Reports: Annually.
    • Final Report: Within 90 days of project completion.

Human/Animal Subject Research

  • IRB or IACUC approval is required before contract execution.
  • No funds will be released without IRB/IACUC approval.

    • Institutional support, equipment, and resources available for research.
