The International Climate Initiative (IKI) is a key instrument of the German Federal Government supporting global efforts in climate action and biodiversity conservation. The IKI collaborates with developing and emerging countries to implement sustainable solutions addressing climate change and biodiversity loss.


About the Grant

To advance the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the IKI Small Grants Programme empowers local actors such as non-governmental organizations to implement impactful projects. The programme provides funding to organizations located in ODA-eligible countries to deliver tangible results in:

  1. Mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions
  2. Adaptation to climate change impacts
  3. Conservation of natural carbon sinks/REDD+
  4. Conservation of biodiversity

Key Features of the Grant:

  • Funding Range: €60,000 to €200,000
  • Funding Period: 1 to 3 years
  • Implementation Agency: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH
  • Target Beneficiaries: Sub-national, national, and regional non-profit organizations in ODA-eligible countries

Since its inception in 2019, the programme has supported local organizations on the frontlines of climate action and biodiversity conservation. By 2029, approximately 220 projects will be funded under the "International Calls" programme.


Eligibility

  • Eligible Organizations: Sub-national, national, and regional non-profit organizations in ODA-eligible countries. For-profit NGOs are eligible if proposals are not-for-profit.
  • Experience Requirements: At least three years of relevant experience.
  • Annual Revenue: Between €60,000 and €500,000 on average.

How to Apply

  • Application Period: 18 November 2024 to 15 January 2025
  • Submission Requirements: Submit a project outline focusing on one or more of the IKI funding areas listed above.
