About RTI International

RTI International is an independent, nonprofit research institute that delivers science-based solutions. They have been working in Asia for over 35 years in areas such as health, education, economic growth, governance, and environmental management.
RTI is implementing the USAID South Asia Regional Energy Partnership (SAREP) project, part of the USAID EDGE initiative.

Project Overview

Indian Railways (IR) has deployed numerous grid-connected rooftop solar PV systems. During grid outages, these systems lose potential energy generation.
This project aims to develop and demonstrate a solution to inject excess solar power into Indian Railways’ 25 kV single-phase AC traction power system under normal and grid outage conditions.

Broad Outcomes

  1. Feed excess power during grid availability when demand is less than solar generation.
  2. Feed entire solar generation during grid outages to the traction system.
  3. Explore scalability of the solution for large load centers where net metering is not granted.

Scope of Work

  1. Phase 1: Project Design

    • Conduct site visit at Tapa Railway Station, Ambala division, Northern Railways.
    • Design a solution to achieve the project’s objectives, including a Single Line Diagram (SLD) and Bill of Quantities (BOQ).
    • Submit a detailed project report for approval.
  2. Phase 2: Commissioning

    • Install and commission the solution, ensuring proper component placement, cable routing, and module interconnection.
    • Conduct tests to ensure the system performs according to specifications.
    • Ensure safety of personnel, equipment, and the existing solar plant during deployment.
  3. Phase 3: Maintenance and Performance Monitoring

    • Provide 1 year of maintenance and performance monitoring post commissioning.
    • Include both preventive and reactive maintenance.
    • Implement a Real-Time Monitoring Unit (RMU) to monitor system performance.
    • Deliver monthly performance reports and an annual maintenance report.

Deliverables

  • Detailed project report (including design, SLD, and BOQ).
  • Installation and commissioning report.
  • Monthly performance reports and an annual report after 1 year.
